Brady Hughes is the Cass County Spelling Bee Champion. Brady is a 6th grader in the Pleasant Hill School District. After 12 rounds of words, Brady spelled “lithe” to win the Bee.
Runner-up was 8th grader Samara Lewis from the Midway School District. Other participants were: Elijah Gray, 4th grader in the Belton School District; Tyler Kimbell, 8th grader in the Harrisonville School District; and Olivia Burton, 8th grader at Ray-Pec South Middle School.
The Bee took place at the Raymore-Peculiar School District Administrative Services Center on March 6.
As winner, Brady receives an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The prize includes airfare, lodging, meals, and spending allowance for the speller and one chaperone. He also receives a trophy and a $50 Visa gift card from UMB Bank.
As runner-up, Samara received a trophy and a $25 Visa gift card from UMB Bank.
All other spellers will received a finalist award.
Joyce Webb was the pronouncer for the Bee. Judges were Steve Cheslik, Cass County Treasurer; Bob Huston, Cass County Assessor; and Mike Vinck, Cass County Clerk.
