RPHS wins state speech sweepstakes championship

State group theatre

Raymore-Peculiar High School won the first-ever state Speech Sweepstakes Championship. In addition, Ray-Pec students were state champions in two other events.

While MSHSAA has honored champions in individual events for years, this is the first year to award a team championship award in speech and a championship award in debate. The state Speech, Debate and Theatre Tournament was April 11-13 on the campus of Missouri State University in Springfield.

Tevin Chavez and Alec Heriford won the state championship in Duet Acting. Ella Schnake won the state championship in Storytelling.

Ray-Pec placed 2nd in the state for its Readers Theatre entry, "Animal Farm." Tevin Chavez placed second in the state in Dramatic Interpretation.

Bailey Martin placed 3rd in the state in Prose. Jillian Humke and Larissa Wratney placed 5th in Duo Interpretation.

Also competing in individual events at the state tournament were: Ian Van Horn, Humorous Interpretation; Kerstin Randolph, International Extemporaneous Speaking; Jaden Lanza and Brenden Lucas in Policy Debate; and Trevor Turner and Jacob Scott in Public Forum Debate.
