Superintendent Dr. Mike Slagle has been selected as a 2021 Superintendent to Watch by the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA).
Dr. Slagle joins just 18 other superintendents nationwide who were selected for the award. Honorees are school district leaders who have fewer than five years of experience as a superintendent and who demonstrate dynamic, fast-paced leadership with strong communication at its core.
The award recognizes leaders who communicate in innovative and effective ways to engage and inform the school community and to expand two-way communication and outreach efforts.
Since becoming superintendent at Ray-Pec, Dr. Slagle has begun a regular email newsletter (Message from Mike), sent regular emails to staff, increased the use of video for features including Fast Facts and Staff Spotlight, and supported the expansion of live streaming of many events during the pandemic. He also led the district through the process to assess needs and prepare for the $72 million no-tax-rate increase Proposition S bond issue, which was overwhelmingly supported by voters in April 2021.
One of his most popular communication methods is low-tech and personal - he greets parents and students in the car rider lines each morning.
Since the 2015-2016 school year, NSPRA has recognized 102 school district leaders as Superintendents to Watch.
Honorees will also be recognized at the NSPRA 2022 National Seminar in Chicago in July.
