On April 12, juniors and seniors at Raymore-Peculiar High School watched scenarios showing the tragic outcomes that can result when someone is driving while impaired or distracted.
Two mock crash events - one for the senior class and one for the junior class - were staged in the grassy area between the high school and the West Peculiar Fire Protection District station.
The events included wrecked cars from Southland Tow; with Ray-Pec theatre students acting as drivers, passengers, and witnesses.
Events unfolded for the most part as they would during an actual accident, with radio traffic shared over a loudspeaker. Each scenario included the death of one student and the arrest of another.
Participating agencies included the Peculiar Police Department, Cass County Sheriff’s Office, Missouri Highway Patrol, West Peculiar Fire Protection District, South Metro Fire Protection District, and Atkinson Funeral Home.
In the season before prom and graduation parties, the mock crash serves as a vivid reminder of the importance of wearing seat belts, putting down the cell phone, and not driving while impaired.
