Law enforcement students practice making traffic stops

Traffic Stop A

This week, students in the Ray-Pec High School Law Enforcement Class are practicing traffic stops. During the April 21 simulation, Superintendent Dr. Mike Slagle was the driver who had been stopped.
As part of a test, students used the radio to communicate with dispatch (Teacher Keegan Garner) and call in their location, the vehicle make, model, and license plate. Students then had to approach the vehicle and address the driver about the reason for the stop and ask for the driver's license and registration. Students returned to the patrol vehicle to again use the radio to check the driver's information. School Resource Officer and Cass County Sheriff Deputy Cole Briscoe assisted with the lesson.
Teachers Keegan Garner and Jeff Moore both teach sections of this class, which is a social studies elective for juniors and seniors. The semester-long course is an introduction to law enforcement. Students learn about the Bill of Rights and how those rights impact their daily lives. They also learn about law enforcement agencies, their functions and procedures. Some of the other hands-on activities in the course have included learning about police radar, holding a mock trial, and an impaired driving simulation.
